UGO posted a list of what they thought the 11 most iconic indie comic creators are. The list reads as follows:
11. Chris Ware- Probably best known for his beautiful graphic novel Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth.
10. Mike Allred- Creator of Madman, arguably one of the best indie comics of the early to mid 90′s.
9. Daniel Clowes- Some of the best graphic novels in the past 20 years have come from his Eightball comic series. From David Boring to Ghost World. (side note: check back soon for our review of his latest graphic novel, Wilson).
8. Joe Sacco- Palestine is his best work, but he most recently released the graphic novel Footnotes in Gaza.
7. Mike Mignola- The man behind Hellboy.
6. Jeff Smith- Artist/writer that brought the wonderful comic Bone to the world. If you have never read Bone, you’re seriously missing out.
5. Los Bros Hernandez- Creator of the very influential comic series Love and Rockets.
4. Dave Sim- He started self publishing Cerebus in 1977. While the originals may be hard to find, you can find the giant collections in comic stores everywhere.
3. Art Spiegelman- The only comic book creator who has ever been awarded a Pulitzer Prize (for his most well known graphic novel Maus- A Survivor’s Tale).
2. Frank Miller- Some may not think of Frank Miller as a creator of indie comics, but 300 and the Sin City series were both published by Dark Horse.
1. Robert Crumb- Credited as one of the first creators of underground comics, he most recently released The Book of Genesis Illustrated by R. Crumb where he took the section of the bible and turned it into a graphic novel, word for word.
While I agree with most of the list, I feel like it’s missing some key people such as:
-Charles Burns- Black Hole started in 1995 and has influenced a vast number of comic creators since.
-Jhonen Vasquez- His dark and humorous comic Johnny the Homicidal Maniac has spawned a huge dedicated fan base and thus introduced them to the world of indie comics.
-Peter Bagge- The 90′s indie comic resurgence wouldn’t have been the same without the great series Hate and the ridiculous tales of Buddy Bradley.
I could probably go on for a long time with names that I think should be on this list, but I’ll leave it at that. All of these creators have done amazing things for the world of indie comics. Who would you add to this list?
